Nobel Prize in Medicine 2026: Optogenetics — Controlling Brain Cells with Light
Why in news: On 5 October 2026, the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, announced that the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine goes jointly to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel 'for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics'. It was the first Nobel announcement of the 2026 season.
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026: the laureates (prize shared equally)| Laureate | Country | Affiliation |
|---|
| Karl Deisseroth | USA | Stanford University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute |
| Peter Hegemann | Germany | Humboldt University of Berlin |
| Georg Nagel | Germany | University of Würzburg (Julius Maximilian University) |
Key facts
- The discovery: In the early 2000s, Hegemann and Nagel found channelrhodopsin, a light-gated ion channel protein in the single-celled green alga Chlamydomonas. When blue light falls on it, the channel opens, ions flow in, and an electrical impulse is produced.
- Birth of optogenetics: In 2005, Deisseroth put the channelrhodopsin gene into rat nerve cells and switched them on with light. Optogenetics uses light to switch chosen nerve cells on or off inside a living brain.
- Uses: Mapping the brain circuits behind memory, emotion and behaviour. Early clinical trials are testing it to restore vision in retinitis pigmentosa.
- Prize money: 12 million Swedish kronor (SEK) per prize, about USD 1.2 million, shared equally. It was raised from 11 million SEK (2025) to mark the 125th anniversary of the first awards in 1901.
- Ceremony: 10 December, the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel (died 1896), in Stockholm. Only the Peace Prize is presented in Oslo.
